Meet the Mentors: Helena Kennedy

The Path to Evolve

After many years of working with children in a primary school setting, Helena sought a new challenge that would still allow her to support children and young people.

She saw becoming a Health Mentor as the perfect opportunity to embrace this challenge. Helena was drawn to Evolve because of the Health Mentor Development Programme (HMDP) and the sponsored university mentoring qualification, which provide mentors with the training and support needed to refine their skills and offer even greater support to their mentees.

Highlights of being a Health Mentor

One of the best aspects of being a Health Mentor is that no two days are ever the same. Each day brings new conversations and opportunities to connect with mentees, allowing for meaningful relationships to form. The most rewarding aspect is seeing the positive impact on the children’s well-being and development, knowing that you’ve played a part in helping them thrive.

Challenges of being a Health Mentor

Helena acknowledges that one of the most challenging aspects of being a Health Mentor is establishing initial trust and rapport with mentees. It’s also a challenge for Helena to accept that there are limits to the support she can offer, even though she’s passionate about making a positive impact on as many lives as possible.

Significant Achievements

As a Health Mentor, Helena’s significant achievements include fostering strong connections with mentees by building rapport quickly and establishing a safe, trusting environment. Her empathetic and engaging approach has inspired mentees to actively participate in mentoring sessions, with some improving their attendance at school specifically to engage in these interactions. By addressing individual needs and creating a supportive atmosphere, she has not only encouraged their personal growth but also enhanced their motivation and overall wellbeing.

Why Health Mentors are so Important

Health Mentors play a crucial role in schools by providing a consistent and visible presence, ensuring pupils always have a trusted person they can turn to for support. Unlike teachers, who often juggle multiple responsibilities and have limited time, Health Mentors are dedicated to focusing on the wellbeing of students, addressing their emotional, mental, and social needs. Their availability allows them to build meaningful relationships and offer personalised support that can make a lasting impact. This consistent support helps pupils feel valued and understood, creating a positive school environment that promotes both personal and academic success.
